Model animation advice

Bruce Husband Bruce Husband

Bruce Husband is an animator on the award-winning animation series, Little Robots, made by Cosgrove Hall Films for CBeebies. Here, he takes us behind the scenes for an exclusive look at how the show is put together.

Bruce also explains some of the tricks of the trade when it comes to creating natural looking movements and life-like speech, which are two of the toughest tasks facing many animators.

You don't always have to have everything moving. With stop-frame animation one of the earliest mistakes is having everything moving all of the time... It's when you don't move the puppet that the animation actually works. It is all about how you use your holds.

Little Robots

Whilst working as one of around twelve animators on Little Robots, Bruce has got to know and love his characters. The series is set in a scrap heap, with the set and stars of the show built to scale.

Creating a 'personality' for each character is just as important in an animation as it is in any production, so great care is taken to make each Little Robot as life-like as possible.

In all puppets there is a kind of metal skeleton which almost looks like a stick figure. Because they are uniquely designed characters they all have very different ways of moving.
