Manchester United announce their new manager

Manchester United have announced Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

Amorim, who is the coach of Portugal team Sporting Lisbon, will join the Red Devils on 11 November and has signed a contract with the club until 2027.

The Portuguese's appointment comes following the departure of Erik ten Hag earlier in the week.

Former United player and temporary manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, will stay on for the club's next three fixtures, until Amorim joins.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will carry on as interim manager until Amorim joins the club

In a statement, Manchester United said that Ruben Amorim would join the club "on Monday 11 November once he has fulfilled his obligations with Sporting."

They added: "Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.

"Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting, the first of which was the club's first title in 19 years.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins."

Amorim's first fixture as Manchester United manager is set be after the international break, on 24 November, against Ipswich.

Ruben Amorim has been the manager of Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon since 2020.

Since joining the club, he helped the team win their first league title in 19 years and guided them to victory in two league cup finals.

The 39-year-old is also a former midfielder, who mainly played his club football in Portugal.

He also won 14 caps for his country.
