Tory MP Rory Stewart says the issue of whether the indicative votes will be a free vote will be decided by the whips on Monday.

But he adds: "Logically speaking, if Parliament is to express its view on Wednesday, it should be free to express its view."

A petition posted on Parliament's website calling for Brexit to be cancelled by revoking Article 50 has passed more than three million signatures. Our story with the latest is here.

The petition has attracted two million signatures in the past 24 hours, although some are from outside the UK.

In the 2016 referendum on the UK's EU membership, 17.4 million people voted to leave, while 16.1 million people voted to remain.

The EU has said Brexit can be delayed from 29 March by two weeks, with that date being pushed back further if Theresa May's withdrawal agreement gets through Parliament.

But if MPs still don't agree to it, the UK has to propose a way forward - and European Council President Donald Tusk has said the government would face "a choice between a deal, no deal, a long extension or revoking Article 50".

Downing Street says Theresa May is "absolutely determined" to end the uncertainty over Brexit.

The prime minister has been briefing her ministerial colleagues on talks with EU leaders after returning from Brussels this morning, her official spokesman says.

"There is now a clear point of decision. If we are able to have a successful vote next week then we can pass the necessary legislation for ratifying the agreement and we can, as a country, be outside the European Union two months today," the spokesman adds.

Business Secretary Greg Clark has said Theresa May's statement on Wednesday evening "wasn't a great success".

Speaking on Nick Robinson's Radio 4 podcast "Political Thinking," he said: “It’s understandable given the sense of frustration she had that people weren’t coming together, but it clearly wasn’t a great success.

"I don’t think it was helpful in resolving the matter.

"But, listen, none of us is infallible and even prime ministers sometimes don’t get the tone quite right.

"I think this is a time for us all to come together to find common ground and to do what it takes to resolve this matter.”

Labour MP Jim McMahon says MPs have "tried desperately to respect the result" of the EU referendum of 2016.

But he highlights that MPs have faced harassment and targeted threats and goes on to criticise the prime minister's speech.

"The prime minister has lost any good faith that I had in working with her," he says.

He says a way forward "can only be achieved if the government can accept the current withdrawal agreement has to be departed from".

"There has got to be a change of direction surely."

Mr Kwarteng says he commends the remarks in terms of increased threats that MPs all face.

"With respect to the process, we still have to have the meaningful vote," he says.

"If it is voted down we will have an SI (statutory instrument) as I described."

Theresa May’s deputy has discussed with opposition parties how MPs could vote on alternatives to the government’s Brexit plan next week.

David Lidington discussed potential options which could be put to MPs and the process by which they could vote.

Sources involved in the talks say options discussed include a so-called “run off” – whereby various options would be put to MPs, with the one with the lowest support being eliminated until a final option was left.

A source said options including Labour’s Brexit plan, Common Market 2.0, no deal and a second referendum have been discussed.

Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi says he found the PM's speech on Wednesday night "sickening", saying it pitted MPs against their constituents.

He says it "made our job harder" and he asks whether MPs will be getting a "full and unreserved apology" from the PM.

Mr Kwarteng replies that the PM "reflected a feeling, certainly among my constituents" that Parliament needs to come to a decision and move the Brexit process forward.
