A man has admitted pouring petrol over people inside a barbers shop and setting it on fire.

Four people had to be taken to hospital after Dilovan Sindi caused an explosion at the shop in Westerhope, Newcastle, in May 2023.

A child was in the shop at the time with his father, but managed to escape unharmed, but another man sustained 65% burns to his body.

Appearing at Newcastle Crown Court, the 39-year-old pleaded guilty to arson with intent to endanger life, grievous bodily harm and attempted wounding. He was remanded and will be sentenced on 5 December.

Sindi, of Sulgrave Road, Washington, also suffered serious burns and required several months of hospital treatment.

One man escaped without injury, while another man sustained minor injuries to his leg, the court heard.

Det Insp Rona Malessa, of Northumbria Police, said: "It is extremely fortunate that at least one person did not die in the incident.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to praise the victims for their co-operation throughout our investigation.

"Our hope is that now their attacker has pleaded guilty to several offences they can take some closure and look to move on with their lives."
