New Forest in Hampshire dates back to 1079 when William the Conqueror established
the area as a royal forest and hunting ground - his 'Nova Foresta'.
Today
the New Forest is a nationally important wildlife environment comprising woodland
pasture, heaths, bogs and the remains of coppices and timber plantations.
The
forest provides excellent opportunities for nature watching. | | | The great thing about woodlands is that they offer little
windows into the past. If you know what you're doing, you can get a rough idea
of how old a forest is.
| | | - Our woods offer amazing opportunities for
wildlife watching. Why not take a few tips from the Nature's Calendar team? Try
your hand at deer watching or birding.
