Castlewellan is an area of outstanding natural beauty located in the foothills of the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland.

Its huge forest park covers 460 hectares and is a magnet for wildlife including Red Squirrels, Pine Martens and Otters.

Castlewellan is also home to the national Arboretum of Northern Ireland.

Accommodation: 'Touring in the Trees' is a ring of 11 small touring sites located so they can be used as bases from which to explore the forest areas. Visitors can purchase a permit giving the freedom of all 11 sites.
Essential kit:Tree identification guide. Binoculars for wildlife watching.
Nature watching:Woodland wildlife. Gardens - the collection of trees and shrubs is set in beautiful surroundings which also include fountains, ponds, ornamental gardens and stunning vistas.
Access:Variable terrain.
Getting there:Castlewellan is located just an hour's drive south of Belfast. Four miles drive from Newcastle, County Down.
Opening times:The forest and Arboretum are open every day of the year from 10am until sunset.
Charges:Car £4.00; Motorbike £2; Minibus £10.
