To toll or not to toll?
updated 06/07/04
M6 toll motorway opened in 2003 Plans to open a second toll motorway have been announced.

The 50-mile highway, linking Birmingham to Manchester, would straddle the M6 motorway with two northbound lanes and two going south.
M6 toll motorway opened in 2003

The new motorway would be twice as long as the current M6 Toll and could cost more to use - although charges have yet to be decided. Charges on the current toll road are about 拢2 a day for cars, and 拢10 a day for lorries.

Environmental groups have already reacted angrily to the proposal, but drivers would be able to shorten their journey time considerably.

So would you use it? Or do you think that there are other alternatives to reducing congestion?

Have your say:

Mira, UK
No way... 6 pounds for a return journey... + road tax + insurance + MOT + Petrol - Good Roads... Go away M6 Toll!

Andy, Manchester
Just how much money do they want? Motorists in this country already pay 拢40 Billion per year in motoring-related taxes - is that not enough? Only a fraction of that is spent on road building and maintenance, so I don't see why we should pay extra to get the roads we deserve (and have already paid for!).

Phil Storey Preston
Toll roads are all very well but aren't we already paying? the M^ Toll was 拢1 the first time I used it in 2 years its now 拢3 (and no warnings on the signs). Legalised robbery

Mike W, Midlands
Same amount of traffic, double the tarmac. Why not put the money into a dedicated roll-on/roll-off train service for cars?! And why can't trains take containerloads up and down the country, with lorries just servicing the endpoints ?

Nigel Macclesfield
The Freight Lobby loves the idea of a new Toll Road - they wont use it of course but it gives them the M6 and the car driver pays to use the Toll road

Nigel Macclesfield
Does this Government have any joined up thoughts? Blair says global warming is the biggest issue. More roads = more car journeys = more Co 2. So build more roads and don鈥檛 expand public transport, but do build Wind turbines

john knutsford
If this ill conceived toll road is to proceed then consideration ought to be given to extending the toll to junction 20 rather than junction 19 of the M6. This would link motorway to motorway rather than to the already congested and dangerous A556.

Damian, Cheshire
Have these idiots who have dreamt up this actually thought of the engineering implications of building 2 sets of lanes on each side of the M6. Just think of the junction layouts, extra bridges, land issues and the cost, it will never go ahead. If you really wanted to improve the link between Manchester and Birmingham, then a totally separate road running parallel between the M6 and M1 also linking Sheffield, Derby and Stoke would be cheaper and better.

dave stoke on trent
great idea current one is such a success!!! will there be a bike lane??? have u cycled between manchester and birmingham?? any solution that lets people from stoke work in manchester/birmingham is a great idea it would drive the wages up here

chris Manchester
So we pay for motorways, we pay for manchester congestion charging and we are told we shouldn't drive. What happens the goverment scraps the metro our alternative to cars

Jason, Stretford
I thought i'd use it, but following on from MR Darling's inexcusable decision to pull funds from the metrolink expansion program, I think i won't now. As far as i'm concerned, this extra tollroad would only be used to fund spending in London rather than in the Northwest - where the tollroads ARE!!!

Dom, Manchester
The solution (Mike, Wigan) is more public transport + road pricing across the UK! Nina is right - We must stop covering britain with tarmac. Stop building out of town shopping centres and offices and encorage people to live close to where they work.

Stuart - Manchstrer
Sam Wiseman - Dont be silly.

DD Bury
Just been to London and back by car as no sensible trains running M6 toll was best part of journey the nutty train co would only sell me fullprice train tickets for a bus ride!

Ian Whitefield
By having faster moving traffic there is less pollution,by having the pay as you go motorway the traffic on both will move faster. It will save lots of money and time.

Myron, Rochdale
I hope just about everyone uses the new M6 toll road. There will be less traffic on the non-toll M6 which will result in quicker journey times on the non-toll M6.

Arthur - Manchester
I think we already pay a tremendous amount of motoring taxation and it is time that the Government used some of that money to reduce congestion. Ideas such as humps in the road are not adequate solutions nor should we pay to use roads when we are already paying for this "priviledge"

Tony Sloan - Manchester
Road tax, Fuel tax where will it end... The government cannot keep taxing their way out of trouble expecting soft targets to finance their mistakes. Who said you can't do a U-turn on the motorway's, It seems Tony Blair & Co have mastered it.

rod @ rochdale
I drive a LOT on French toll motorways where the traffic flows freely .Yes to toll roads

Sam Wiseman
Will there be a cycle lane ?

David, Hale
Would I use it? You bet!!

jane from manchester
I pay enough road tax without paying more

Jim - Royton
Unless they sort out the connections to the M1 and the M40 as well, then the toll road is just a quick way to get to another lot of congestion. The route into Manchester from J19 of the M6 is pretty hopeless too.

mohammed azam manchester
i would definately use the proposed toll road anything that would decrease journey times can only be a good thing.

Pete Mackie - Old Trafford
As a Mancunian who regularly travels with work, I see the new toll road as a great idea. In the absence of any better ideas, economical & clean multi-occupancy cars on fast motorways make a lot of sense. Shame it takes the private sector to sort it out though!

jon lord
When this govt came to power they promised in their manifesto that there would be an unprecedented commitment to public, itegrated transport. The reality is sickeningly predictable and illustrates once again how politicians use words like whores use makeup. They have committed instead to huge road building projects; the reason - the income generated by motorists for the Exchequer. It is impossible to overstate Labour's glib faith in the gullibility and selfishness of the British electorate.

Peter - Cheshire
If it eases conjestion in Cheshire and quickens my journey then yes, go fit it

Alan, Rochdale
I have used the M6 Toll in the Midlands, it is fantastic and really cuts journey times. I have to say that after sitting for an hour at Thelwall, I would definately use a toll road to make up time.

Jacqui, Warrington
Why is everyone saying it is a Birmingham-Manchester Road when it stops South of Warrington? Where does the traffic go then?

Mike, Wigan
So Nina, exactly what IS the solution?

Stuart Hall - Salford
I have used the M6 toll going to London and found it very effective, and fast. Not much traffic and free flowing I would welcome this to be extended to Manchester.

Joanne Deane -Failsworth
If it helps me get from work back home to the pub quicker then I will be very giddy and use it.

nina. manchester
This is another short term measure to a long term problem. When is the government going to realise that covering britain in motorway is not going to solve anything.
