paul, city centre
Hopefully things will back on soon. No phone, no email - world stops, fantastic.
Arsene - London
Tried to call Old Trafford to get the trophy sent down to Highbury. Thought they had screened my call. They may as well bring it on Saturday.
()z, Blackburn
I agree with Nick, Stockport. Disaster recovery plans should have kicked in and an ETA for a (minimul) restoration service should be available, even if BT have to assume the worst regarding the actual damange.
BT will learn some lessons from this if nothing else.
LOL to Micheal Caine (London)
Gregg, Central Manchester
Would Andrew in Manchester care to explain to us all why he thinks that BT should foot the bill for this disruption and compensate people and businesses for "projected and/or estimated loss?
Richard, Birmingham
We have a lot of dealings with North, that's were our customers are. They are unable to contact us and we can't call them. It's great... I never had a peaceful day like this before at work.
Tony ,Wythenshaw
Our call centre has been severly affected, and unfortunatly bt can not give any update. However dont know what bt are meant to do until they can look at the damage,as frustrating as this is its the fire brigades call
annon, Midlands
I work for BT and find it very intersting that people are already blaming BT for not doing enough to fix the problem, not sure how our engineers are expected to do this when the fire service will not allow access. As for no contingency plans, BT has approx 60 Million lines in use and it is impossible and not cost effective to have back up lines for everyone.
Leigh, Stoke.
The ADSL lines use the Remote Server, which is situated in Manchester - that's currently cut off from the world because of this fire, so people can't use the internet, even if their phone DOES work. Either way, it's a cracking excuse to go out and enjoy a few beers.
anon cambridge
why not just BT at least have a look before judging a company who have no way of even looking at what has occured, why do people expect BT to foot the bill when they are gonna have a hefty bill to foot themselves!!!!!!!! please give us fault advisors a break we are only human after all!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant believe most people are being very reasonable about this, whilst the little people are causing more trouble, something a bit wrong here!!!!!!!!!!
Paul, Dorset
All I can say is where are the emergency plans for the companys that relie so much on phones.
A good company should have the means to move its call centres in an emergency. I know one major organisation that will be reviewing its contracts to ensure that its suppliers can keep in contact with them if something happens like this again.
Cable and Wireless team manchester
BT call loggers you have our vote and sympathy, we are affected with you, and know what it is like, we also know how hard BT are working on this you have absolutely no way of getting your guys into that tunnel, without them coming out with a good suntan!!!!!!
Gabriel, Durham.
Our ISP hosts in manchester, site that make thousands are down today, our company has lost a lot of money today. A lot.
It's a dangerous game, and this was apparently the risk. Meow.
Anon, Stretchy
I feel sorry for Annon in Sale!!! What a gimp!
Back on Subject. These things are here to test us. perhaps we needed an event like this to make us realise just how vulnerable such systems are. Imagine if this was indeed a surgical strike - but across the country!
Paul, Stockport
I dont know if this is related in anyway, but my mobile phone has had no network cover since about 3am. If this is the case i'm just wondering if there is anyone else being effected on mobile phones too? I also think that everyone blaming BT for this is not fair. We still don't even know the cause of the fire yet. If it was started deliberately how can anyone be prepared for that!?
Michael Mulville, London
I have worked in Telecoms for years. This things happen. I am sure BT are working as hard as possible to rectify the problem. These things happen. Is it really that important you can make/receive calls or your broadband is down ? There are bigger problems in the world.
Jackie - Blackburn
Some people are totally unrealistic - the phone network runs on a laberynth of plastic!& wire cables underground (in a tunnel not safe for BT engrs to go!!!) Let everyone sit and think how they would get the network running again and keep everyone informed???? I don't work for BT!! but I have a brain godd luck to the engineers
Warren, Manchester
can somebody please tell me how I am supposed to order my Large Doner Kebab tonight please. It looks like I'm gonna have to walk all the way to the chippy. this simply isn't on
Alastair, City Centre
So it's down for a week? Is that the estimate? At least it means that I won't have to put up with Scouse Mike keeping us "entertained" at work while the phones are down!
Rachel, Stoke
I'd be interested to hear Leigh's explanation about phone service being unaffected while Broadband suffers.... Leigh?
Brenden, Ellesmere Port
All of you having a nice quiet Monday should brace yourselves for the day the lines are repaired. I expect you'll feel like last years hangovers have come back round for that one day!
Mark, Manchester
It's then Salford scallys throwing woodbines down 'oles that are to blame !
Di Mogga, Ardwick Manchester
Looks like living in Ardwick has its compensations - city centre location and touch wood my internet and phone are still working.
Worrying that a fire can cause so much damage to systems.
Andrew, Manchester
No phones, no fax and no computer network = no work. How much is this costing businesses? Will BT be footing the bill? I doubt it!
Andy, Manchester
My money is on it being a terrorist attack...
Anon Lincoln
I agree with anon from Birmingham I'm also bt staff
IT IS NOT OUR FAULT and our engineers will begin repairs as soon as it is safe to do so, We kow businesses are affected we know vunerable customers are affeted but what do people expect us to do wave a magic wand. As soon as more information is availible the public will be informed. We cannot tell you what we do not know. Well done to all the repair staff out there for their hard work in answering the calls
Mark, Manchester
Like others here I also work for a company with a large call centre which is affected by this outage - the latest we've heard is 130,000 lines are down and engineers can't start work until this evening to fix the problem. It's likely to be Wenesday before service is restored. Where is this information available from BT though?
Nick, Stockport
This reveals how vulnerable the BT network is. Maybe we can now see some proper redundancy planning? The whole concept of the internet was to prevent this carrier loss happening in war time, yet here we are in peace time with virtually no ADSL access for businesses in Manchester! I know this took BT by surprise, but some redundancy planning should have gone on before now, surely.
Anon, Surrey
I sympathise with Pete in Reading - my websites are down, no emails either. Lost a ton of money through this. Come on, BT! Get it fixed...pleeeeeeease!
matthew swindells macclesfield
well what can i say i have no confidence in bt any more what steps could have been taken?
Phil, Manchester
Spare a thought for the elderly. A telephone is sometimes their only link to the outside world, how would they get help if the phones are down? If you have elderly relatives or know any elderly people within the affected areas you might want to pop around and check they are ok. I am sure they would appreciate it.
Gregg, Central Manchester
the true extent of the repair will not become
clear until the fire authority have declared the site safe and BT engineers can gain access to the tunnels. I don't think it fair to judge BT at this early stage - Would you go down there if it wasn't safe??
People who normally dial into our servers cannot phone me to complain when they can't access them :?)
matt swindells macclesfield
i dont no what to say my buisness cant make any phone calls to our customers i hope there will be an explanation
Anon BT
I have to log all these as faults as I work for BTs LL faults. Ive had a earbashing from people, but I still love my job.
Carl, Liverpool
This happened in Liverpool in about 1993 (I think) from memory it was three weeks before everything was running again...
Micheal Caine (London)
"you was only supposed to blow the BLOODY DOORS OFF"
Si, Plymouth
91热爆 broadband down due to this. Hope it's restored soon!!
Mark, Kabul, Afghanistan
I'm in Kabul, waiting for a set of files from a company in West Wales; they can't get to their internet site, so they can't deliver the files. The fire is having a knock-on effect around the world!
Anon Sheffield
I work for a large organisation in Sheffield with a branch in Trafford. We lost connection for 1 min at 2 am and our ISDN backup line took over. Our users in Manchester are
working just as normal, so the moral of the story is get you disaster recovery plan in operation
Mo Khan, Manchester
I got to work and got sent back, i work at a call centre. Great!! No work for three days!!
ANON LEEDS
I WORK FOR MAJOR BUSINESS IN BT....AS THE ENGINEERS ARE NOT ALLOWED DOWN THE TUNNELS YET AS THEY ARE NOT CLEARED THEN IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR US TO GIVE AN ESTIMATED REPAIR TIME.....WE ARE DOING OUR BEST FOR ALL OUR CUSTOMERS
Anonmanchester
I work for a telecarrier in manchester - and I hear it will be a week before all services are likely to be restored.........
Steve, Wythensawe
No incoming calls in our Callcenter but eMail and outgoing calls are fine. Even as a big customer of BT we still don't have any ETA, poor service from BT.
Rev K.Kenrick Stockport
Whby haven't BT put anydetails of this and who uit is affectiong on their Website "News" section ???
anon birmingham
I work for BT and am fed up with everyone blaming BT for this,we don't even know what has caused this fire at the moment and we can't give any estimated repair times until our engineers are allowed in the tunnel to assess the damage which the fire brigade have not allowed them to do yet! Or should we just have our own fire fighters to do the job! how unreasonable!
Duncan, Manchester
Thank god my ADSL at home is working, phones at work aren't. Like previous callers I find it slightly amusing that a nuclear attack proof tunnel succombs to a fire. Less amusing is the disruption to emergency service radio. I for one am glad that these are taking priority over other users.
George Smiley
Using a tunnel originally built as a nuclear bunker is all very well, but if you put too much equipment down there and don't monitor it properly, look what happens....
Dave, Timperley
Last week a powercut for an hour at midnight - no explanation or apology. Now no telephone service. At least the sun is shining (for a change)
Araf, Leicester
The grey old thing (Allan) in the corner should be able to fix it.....
Dave,Salford Quays
As I kept getting call minder when I rang home in Timperley that my wife was still on the phone-for the last 4 hours !
Sylvia Tameside
If anyone tries to ring my home phone they get my BT answer message so I presume this is a fault as I am not on the phone also I cannot dial out when I tried to report it by email from work Bt are not accepting faults when I try to use the automated fault service this is not being accepted either so I expect I just wait but I think its weird my
Bt answer service is kicking in!
Susan, Cornbrook
Let this chaos remind us to keep up our vigilance. This is seemingly from an isolated fire, terrorism would be so very much worse.
Roel, Manchester
I totally understand Annon from Sale. Work on Helpdesk but now our customers can't call us...if only all mondays were like this!
steve, newcastle
i work for a IT support company and few customers are off due to the problems i dont think BT will fix the problem promptly , and will cause chasos for business's losing money
doc, sheffield
I work in Sheffield and its affected our Email system. No emails today.... bliss
Martin, Buxton
Phones are down as far away as Buxton in Derbyshire.
Daniel, Manchester
The irony of this is that the Guardian Telephone Exchange underneath Manchester was built to protect the phone network incase of a nuclear war...
Annon, Alderley Edge
It's awful! I'm supposed to be completing a sale on my first house and I can't call my solicitors in Stockport or anyone else! Also very worrying that 999 services are affected.
Kieron, Stockport
What infuriates me is the lack of information (as usual) from BT. Where do BT publish information about the status of the problem, expected times for return of service, etc? I can't find anything on their website (the news link seems to be another sales channel)!
Alison, Manchester
Does anyone know how long its going take? Are we talking, hours, days?
Peter, Manchester
If I'm right this gives us a glimpse into our cold-war history. It seems like tbis tunnel was designed to whithstand a 20-megaton atomic weapons. So there is something amusing about a fire causing such chaos.
Chris, Manchester
All I can say is HAVE IT!!!!!!! I've sobered up and I'm sat at my desk doing jack!
annon, midlands
ahhhhhhhhhh, i work at bt faults and bllomin eck' is it busy
Alex, Old Trafford
I definately blame BT for not giving us a penalty yesterday.
Leigh, Stoke
It is important to stress that this is the centre of many broadband connections in and around Manchester too. Even those WITH telephones working may NOT have broadband because of this.
Annon - Cornwall
We are connected to our head office in your area and are twiddling our thumbs because of this fire in Manchester it just shows how much we rely on IT these days
Annon Manager, Sale
I'm the Manager of the other person and they can expect the sack shortly. I kid you not.
Alex, Manchester
It's total chaos! I work at MMU and the telephone system is dead; no incoming calls whatsoever and very few outgoing calls. The mobile carriers are also experiencing problems due to the increased traffic on their system. On a positive note though, my ADSL connection @ home is working just fine; can't say the same thing for my landline though for calls, either incoming or outgoing.
Pete, Reading
Not so good for everyone. I have two websites and both are down because the hosts are in Manchester.
keith, manchester
My business has lost a lot of money, but I know BT are working hard to rectify the problem
Annon, Sale.
I think it's great. I work in a telephone support centre and we have had no work to do. No one can call us and we can't call anyone back. I've been reading my book, twiddling my thumbs and drinking coffee. You don't normally get Monday's like this. I think my hangover has cleared now.
