Fanny, Amy's older sister, is a dancer in a down at heel theatre. She is both worldly and extremely determined. She has Edmund Sparkler, heir to the largest fortune in England, eating out of the palm of her hand and his mother, Mrs Merdle, bending over backwards to give her what she wants in order to get rid of her. Fanny will stop at nothing to win the game of social snakes and ladders.

While studying law at Bath College, Emma was spotted by a casting agent and chosen from among dozens of young hopefuls to play schoolgirl Becky Radcliffe in the children's drama Grange Hill. Emma's next big break came when she appeared in Bloodlines as the tragic young policewoman Justine Harris. This role led to two other productions; Riot at the Rite; and the role for which she is best known, Romola, in Hotel Babylon.
