About This Event
The Russian nationalists are fantastic at telling musical fairy tales. It’s partly because they delight in lavish orchestral effects. Glinka, the ‘Father of Russian Music’, shows how it’s done with his firecracker of an overture. Rimsky Korsakov takes up the mantle with music of seduction and adventure in his version of A Thousand and One Nights.
In between these fables is a shot of reality in the form of a personal account of life under the authoritarian Soviet regime. Sheku Kanneh-Mason reprises the Shostakovich concerto which won him so much acclaim as last year’s 91Èȱ¬ Young Musician.
