In its only UK concert this year, classical supergroup the World Orchestra for Peace returns to the Proms with its conductor Valery Gergiev. Fantasy confronts reality in a programme that moves from the fairy-tale magic evoked in Strauss鈥檚 Die Frau ohne Schatten to the human tragedy of Mahler鈥檚 Sixth Symphony. Roxanna Panufnik鈥檚 Three Paths to Peace celebrates the common ground shared by Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

About this event

The World Orchestra for Peace returns with its conductor Valery Gergiev for its fourth Proms appearance and its only UK appearance this year. This classical supergroup celebrates Strauss鈥檚 150th anniversary with the colourful, fairy-tale soundscapes of his operatic masterpiece Die Frau ohne Schatten.

Fantasy gives way to reality in the prescient tragedy of Mahler鈥檚 Sixth Symphony, the glorious agony of its final movement foreshadowing the composer鈥檚 own personal heartbreaks.

Roxanna Panufnik鈥檚 Three Paths to Peace, commissioned by tonight鈥檚 orchestra, meshes Christian, Jewish and Islamic musical traditions to tell the story of Abraham and Isaac.
