Concert Information
The 91Èȱ¬ SSO begins a new decade with a Saturday night concert of musical 'firsts', all inspired by Scotland.
Bent Sørensen’s World Premiere takes its title from the poem 'Enchantress Farewell' by Sir Walter Scott and he’s added a hint of a jig which, he says, "is as Scottish as Scottish can be for a Dane." Emma-Ruth Richards, meanwhile, has turned to contemporary poets including Jackie Kay, Don Paterson and Carol Ann Duffy to inspire a song-cycle inspired by the clarity of light that ‘northerliness’ brings. And the concert ends with the first symphony published and performed by an American woman: Amy Beach’s ‘Gaelic’ Symphony. Premiered in 1896, it uses themes from Scottish, Irish and English folk music and is a reminder that Scotland and its culture have been a source of inspiration to composers across three centuries.
The works featured in this concert will be recorded for future broadcast on 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3.
