Concert Information
We reach the end of our Nielsen cycle with the composer’s sixth, most quixotic symphony. While his intention was to express something ‘completely idyllic’, the idyll is infiltrated by irony, violence and doubt in the face of the composer’s own failing health. Following a phantasmagorical Humoreske, death comes knocking in a final set of variations, by turns sinister and hilarious. A night of contrasts, from John Foulds’s paen to the raw vitality of spring to Sibelius’s evocation of forest spirits, Tapiola, which prefaces Rachmaninov’s soulful Fourth Piano Concerto, played by Denis Kozhukin, ‘already in the company of the greats’. Le soir.
