'Death in Venice' was Britten鈥檚 final opera and its music shimmers and glitters like water; but it鈥檚 also mysterious, and sometimes sinister, just like the city itself. Martyn Brabbins is a champion of British (and Britten-ish) music and his selection highlights the composer鈥檚 darker side. The 'Russian Funeral' for brass and the beautiful 'Lachrymae' - written for Scottish violist William Primose - are mournful works, while his song-cycle, 'Nocturne', haunts the worlds of night and sleep. Mark Padmore is our soloist.
