Like Joey Bada$$, who he has supported on tour, fast-rising 20-year-old South London rapper Loyle Carner makes smart, soulful music that looks back to the feel and flavour of 90s hip-hop - giving a laid-back and very British update to the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and Gang Starr. Fittingly, he first made ripples on a 2013 Rejjie Snow track called 1992, which has now clocked up almost a million plays on YouTube, before going it alone with his free-to-download EP, A Little Late.
The EP was supported on Radio 1 and 1Xtra by the likes of Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart and DJ Semtex, before Carner collaborated with the Mercury-nominated rapper, spoken word artist and playwright Kate Tempest on Guts - a 6 Music favourite. Carner toured with Tempest in February, winning him legions of new fans, and plays Glastonbury tipped for huge things. 鈥淪o dope,鈥� as one fan on Soundcloud succinctly described his music.
