The session was taken by Ashley for Caradon, who worked on our technique with us. Everything form the depth of the blade in the water to the idea of keeping the hands moving whilst holding body weight over the seat was covered. After the session all in the boat had a good idea of how we should be trying to row from now on. Thursday's session saw the crew trying to pick up where we had left off on Tuesday. The session was again focused on technique with most of the time dedicated to a long row to the Lifeboat station and back again. We are now starting to realise that this style of rowing is better for the crew as a whole in the way that it smoothens out the movements whilst not reducing the power in the boat. Saturday saw the annual Buller Cup going of from Newquay in damp conditions. I had been drawn in Speculation in Berth 4 with Liam, Jeb and three other Newquay rowers. A good start saw the Rose take an early lead but all crews managed to catch up and hold together in a close pack right up to the first mark. A clash on the mark between Rose and Active, in which Active knocked off the Roses rudder, saw us go wide and take a lead on the second leg. The conditions on this leg were hard to row in and after recovering from the clash the Active tried to squeeze passed us but failed, leading to another clash which put all five boats in a line, all fighting to get to the second mark first. Rose managed to do this first, closely followed by Active, then us, then the Fly and lastly Good Intent. This was the way it stayed until the finishing line. Everyone agreed that it had been a great race and that it was good that it had been so close.
