Charlie's Diary

Training on Tuesday saw me rowing in my most regular position of number two.

The bumpy sea conditions meant that in some places water was hard to find, but it would turn out that this would be good training for Saturday's Starred Event.

The usual warm up row was followed by a row to the Lifeboat Station that utlilised a stroke which was long but still very fast, the idea being 'quick hands'.

On the way back we rowed a stroke that was the same length and the same rate all the time. The only aspect of the stroke that was changed was the power on the catch. This was done in the style of pyramids.

I could not attend training on Thursday so instead used the weights and rowing machine on Friday.

Saturday's Starred Event at Mevagissey was met with rain and rough sea conditions.

After getting soaked just from launching, the crew started to wish they had brought their wetsuits! A slightly muddled start saw us fall into a pack competing for seventh place with Helford, Zennor and Falmouth.

The tricky conditions made it hard to find water for the first leg. After being rowed through by Falmouth we managed to get ahead of the other two crews to get the water on the mark.

The two legs around the mark saw us shorten our stroke and increase the rate to get away for Helford and Zennor and to stay in contact with Rame. The first half of the last leg, on which water was much easier to find (for stroke side at least), saw us move up to neck and neck with Rame.

The crew managed to lengthen the stroke while keeping the rate lively and this saw us row through Rame to finish seventh in the first heat and seventh overall.
