You are my obsession

LONDON - As someone who sometimes thinks they might suffer from mild tendencies (great doc on Radio 4's You and Yours on Monday) , one thing I love about football is how it makes it ok to be obsessive.
So, come on, let's hear your tales of obsession & football...
Here's a couple to get you started: Mark Poole is Scottish but that hasn't stopped him getting into the spirit of things (incidentally, our boss Roger Mosey is talking about the difficulties of being the British Broadcasting Corporation when only England are in the World Cup on our editor's blog).
Mark plans to find a pub in London that is home to each of the 32 teams competing in the World Cup and As he puts it:
I thought Portugal, Poland and Brazil would be easy, but does London have an Angolan community? What about Paraguay? And what sort of venue would Saudis choose to watch the game? Mind you, given my congested fixture list, any break from alcohol would prove very welcome.
But Mark's fixation is surpassed by Gman writing at ....
Gman is a sticker collector extraordinaire and needs only 24 more (at last post) to fill his Panini album.
He could send off to buy the missing few - but his pride means he wants to "swap to completion".
I like his description of the World Cup: "Essentially the climax of four years of waiting, debating and watching videos of the last World Cup," though do his views on rival sticker albums show mildly disturbing tendencies?
England have their own own album produced by the frankly second-rate Merlin collective. All people who love stickers do NOT collect Merlin.
Returning to the music theme from previous posts, (football and music are a happy combination for obsessives as Nick Hornby proved so definitively) here's a site rounding up .
Later this week we'll be speaking to Jimmy Pursey from Sham '69, whose song Hurry Up England is tipped for the No 1 spot, so more on that to come..
I can't for the life of me remember what I was watching at the time, but did anyone hear that song from a group of builders shown on TV at some point over the bank holiday? It was the best one I've heard anyway. Post a link if anyone knows what I'm on about..

I do have an obssession with football. Unfortunately many people where I live [in Florida] do not share my enthusiasm. I prefer to see the World Cup and enjoy it. I will be listening to the 91热爆, DW on the Internet, Univision on TV, and RDP and Radio Nacional de Angola on Shortwave for my World Cup Games.

I'm from the US and will be traveling around Europe - mostly in Germany - during the world cup. We do not have tickets to any games, but we have devised a plan to see as much action as possible by going to the fanzone in host cities and by being in specific cities for specific matches:
10 June We're in London to watch England*
11 June in Gelsenkirchen to see USA v Czech
17 June in Prague to see Czech v Ghana
20 June in Berlin to see Germany v Ecuador
21 June in Amsterdam to see Netherlands v Argentina
*Does anyone have any recommendations on where to watch England's opener while in London?

Yes I have an obsession with the WC, the mere fact I am here indicates that. I am starting a new job on 12th June and am kicking myself for it. So heres my plan to watch as much as I can:
Buy a pocket TV and have my lunch at 2pm, so I can watch the first half of that game. Finish at 5pm and watch the game sitting in my car. Finish, drive 40 miles home, and I will have Sky Plussed the evening game, where I will watch delayed coverage of it, finish it, and then watch the 2nd half of the afternoon game that I missed whilst at work, hopefully not finding out the result in the process. Now thats a plan! Am I obsessed?

no jwalant, that doesn't sound obsessive at all! i guess one of the perks of the job here is that all the journalists have TVs on their desks (with which we can watch all the hundreds of feeds of news and sport from around the world - though of course i think we know what people will be watching at 2,5 & 8pm!)
I have already started to daydream about what it would be like on Sunday 9 July if Andy Murray was in the Wimbledon men's final in the afternoon and England in the World Cup final in the evening...

I've written a program that has all the world cup information you would want (team info, stadium info, scores, calendar) on a Palm OS device. If you have a Treo phone then you can even download the scores wirelessly. However for the scores to be downloadable someone has to update them. That will be me - I'll be watching all 64 games! It's going to be an intense month and I'm really excited.
PS: sorry didnt want this to sound like an ad, the program is free btw.

I have a WC addiction, and being a Muslim female, I wont be any bars drinking or anything, just at home enjoying the time away from Uni and watching it at home with family. And bantering with friends via txt and online.

I am a university student in California who is obsessed with the world cup. Though I can't be in Europe to more fully appreciate the atmosphere, I have recently combined my goal of watching as much of the WC as possible at the british pub down the hill from my house with an ardent effort not to procrastinate on my thesis so I can finish it before June 9th. With my record of procrastination after 4 years of school, finishing a paper anytime before zero hour on the due date is a mind-boggling Herculean feat. Too bad I'll miss the USA-Italy game due to graduation... Viva la copa!

Does the person who compiled your top 10 world cup strikers article think that Just Fontaine is some kind of water feature?

Jeremy, you might want to check out the Clapham Grand for the England opening game. I haven't been there, but it looks pretty impressive - - they've got a 40-metre screen!

I'm so excited that I've had to start my World Cup 2006 on Pro Evolution Soccer on my PS2. I've got a patched version of the game so all the teams have correct squads, kits etc. and yes I play every game. Tonight I'll be playing Spain .v. Ukraine and Tunisia .v. Saudi Arabia. It's so realistic that it just wish 9th June was here now. Let's hope it's not too realisitc though, England lost 3 - 2 to Paraguay in their opening game !!

The Tale of "Lucky Saw"
During Euro 1996 i was doing some DIY outside, watching the game on the telly through the front window with a tenon saw in my hand.
My little sister was inside watching the England group games (Scotland as i recall). She called me in to fetch something from a high shelf at which point England scored.
Putting down the saw i had carried in on the table Scotland nearly equalised. I sat on the sofa, saw in hand and England scored again.
For the rest of the tournament (inc penalty shoot outs) i had to watch the games with "Lucky Saw" in hand.
I didn't have it for the Germany game (in the pub i think i may have been arrested) and we lost!
Years later, my dad admitted he watched the Norwich playoff semi final against Wolves with the saw in hand as an omen, we won of course!
I wonder where it is now?

Mark is just going to have to gut it out and keep drinking, like every good OCD. That's what being obsessive is all about. It's about not being able to let go: not being able to let go of that pint glass; not being able to let go of the game despite his team's absence from The Big Tournament...

Being ever so sad, I have a collection of notebooks dating back to 1974 with all games and results from every World Cup.
This year I have finally put pen and paper away and have a series of Excel spreadsheets with my (and some friends) predictions, plus, of course, the one that will contain the actual results as they happen.
Work will suffer badly during the month of June...
But hey! Once every four years...
Er, well, ok, every two years 鈥斅營 am the same at the Euro Championship.

I can't wait for World Cup. I just wish that I can watch all the games. I will be luck if I watch 10 % of it. I am in Boston, MA USA. During game times I am working. Do you guys know any website that I can watch the games from. Or better; Record so that I can watch it at home later?
PS: Of course then all they trying to dodge people who wants to tell you the scores and wants to talk about the game is a whole other issue

Can someone explain to me why we in this country have an obsession for playing in red shirts. I thought our national colours were white shirts blue shorts with a red trim. Is this all to do with the fact that we won the world cup in 1966 in red ? I cannot see why when we are at home we play in red like today against Jamaica, or in the world cup against Sweden we will be playing in red, WHY >? there is no colour clash and why shouldn't we be wearing the traditional white shirts. I am tired of us wearing red to placate either TV requirements or over sentiment. Does anyone else agree with me ? The only time we should be playing in red is away from home when there is a colour clash ie Poland or Finland perhaps but not as a matter of course.
Maybe in tournaments there is a toss of a coin to decide colours but surely that is not necessary if there is no significant colour clash.
