World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

Seeking serendipity

claire_heald66.gifLONDON - It's one of the longest games of keepy-uppy the world has seen. Two England fans are kicking a football - and not just any ball, what they call the 'olympic torch for the World Cup' - from the UK to Germany.

The is the follow up to Christian Wach and Phil Wake's 2002 effort, when they took 10 weeks to .

Then they enjoyed the highs of football with Tibetan monks, the lows of someone stealing the ball in China - they asked for it back - and found that an impromptu game broke down barriers in every country en route.

"The guiding light of the whole trip is " says Christian. "Carrying a football got us out of tricky situations and into places we wouldn't have been able to go - like Kyrgyzstan."

This time, the first fixture is at exotic Battersea Park, London on Sunday, "Bring a light and a dark top for mob football", before they head to Europe to play at Ypres, Belgium, and on the former line of the iron curtain in Germany.

"Yes" they get sore feet. "No" they couldn't possibly say if it's just the one ball that's used. But everyone is allowed a kick: "Our job is to make everybody feel that they're part of the World Cup, so countries that don't qualify but are en route are part of it too."

What a wonderful concept - the "Spirit of Football" kicks its way across the globe.

Hope they don't take a wrong turn and end up at Guantanamo Bay!

I like this concept of the "Spirit of Football". This should be made a part of every World Cup starting in 2010.

On other football news, Galavision [the US Latin Station related to Univision] released a video clip on the Football Anthem for World Cup 2006 titled: "Arriba Arriba" [Upward Upward].

This is for Latin Football Fans and was recorded in different areas of Germany by the Mexican Artists Ana Barbara, Mariana Seoane, Pablo Montero, and the Dominican Singing Sensation Anais. This song has proven to be a hit.

I think the so-called 'Spirit of Football' should not just saved for the World Cup.

The message should be on every football pitch, at every level, from Hackney Marshes to the San Siro.

Agreed, the 'spirit' of football should not be forgotten.

In Australia 30 years ago Football was for "wogs and poofs", not it is recognised as a national game with no ethnic boundaries on the national stage.

Some of the smaller clubs in the local kick abouts still have the occasional riot, however it's just rivalry at it's peak (not best).
