On The Ropes

Adam Ant was one of the most successful UK pop stars of the early 1980s.

He was known for his flamboyance and rakish sense of style in his pop videos, as well as hits including Stand And Deliver and Prince Charming.

In an interview this week on 91Èȱ¬ Radio 4 he talked to John Humphrys about his music career and how he feels it contributed to a diagnosis for bipolar disorder, a term he dislikes.

He has attempted suicide, been sectioned, and spent periods in psychiatric care - a place he was horrified by:

"It is a nuthouse. It is worse than Bedlam. ... You were just fed and given medication.

"You know the film One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest? It is like that but this is real."

He also talks about his highly publicised arrest and trial at the Old Bailey.

During the conversation he speaks vividly about his bad experiences, saying: "I want the Prime Minister or whoever to know that takes place because it's wrong."

Adam Ant will embark on a UK tour with his new band The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse in May.
