International development secretary at TUC
Talking of Andrew Mitchell I just bumped into him at the . Indeed I think it must be the first time a Conservative cabinet minister has ever dared to visit the TUC.
Though I do recall one or two more junior Conservative figures visiting TUC conferences during the latter years of the Thatcher-Major government.
"Andrew Mitchell is very welcome here," a senior TUC official told me.
"Because he is the only minster who is not actually cutting anything at the moment."

The original concept was noble, the Commonwealth Development Corporation was, in its various incarnations, set up to spur agriculture and clean water in (mostly) sub-Sahara Africa. Now it's the last place it wants to be because there's no money in it. That's what hedgefunds do, make loads of dosh for the owning 'partners'. Wait a minute, isn't this supposed to be a public body? It was until Claire Short privatised it under a 'New' Labour initiative, and then Hilary Benn flogged it off at a knockdown price to its managers. Then they turned themselves into 'partners' and paid themselves the going rate for hedgefund managers. No wonder they take cabs to top of the range eateries.
Regards, etc.
