Lhasa and Shigatse

The team had another day of acclimatising in Lhasa. The Expedition Leader, Expedition Manager, and one of the Researchers spent most of the day trying to obtain liquid nitrogen to freeze the blood samples to be taken on the mountain. They also tried to source planks of wood to make laboratory benches in the lab tent at base camp. I spent a good proportion of the morning on the internet updating the Xtreme Everest website, sending photos and generally keeping in touch with the UK. In the afternoon, I went in search of a 'pee bottle'. High up on the mountain there are no toilet facilities, and it is too cold to take any clothing off outside your tent, so using a bottle is the only answer. It is much harder for girls than boys as you can imagine!
Nikki, one of the other team members, and I also had to buy scarves. Further into the road trip the dust is so thick on the roads that you need one to try to protect yourself from damage to throat and sinuses. We found one in the Bakor market for about 2 pounds. It did requre some haggling, but we weren't too aggressive. In the evening the team went to dine at the Yak Hotel. This is run by a Dutch family in the centre of Lhasa, and the food was excellent. Some of the team had had problems with upset stomachs, so it was good to eat somewhere that met European stndards.
The following day we set off in five Landcruisers for Shigatse. The drive took about four and a half hours. When we arrived in Shigatse we immediately went out to see the Shigatse monastery. This monastery is huge, and is the home of the Pancham Lama. This is the Lama that chooses the next Dalai Lama. Read more at . Afterwards some of us walked along the path by the prayer wheels that surround the entire monastery. The views were incredible.
In the evening, we had traditional chinese food at our hotel in Shigatse. We need an early night as we will be on the road for over 8 hours tomorrow. Onwards and Upwards!

GOOD LUCK to everyone! Kay your blog is fantastic - thank you! Word is spreading fast around UHCW. Sadly life is so much duller here in Coventry. Tell Chris he is a very lucky man and we miss him terribly already. We're also a teeny bit worried he might pick up some crazy ideas if he spends too much time with Mike Stroud. Keep posting - it sounds fascinating and we feel closer to you all for it. All the best .. Sylvia, Caitie, Ollie and Cam (IMRAY)
