Sugababes - 'Change'

SugababesI tell you what, if I was the producer of a TV teen drama, and one of the major characters had just died, and I was looking for a song to use over a montage where all the other characters were trying to get on with their lives, but kept finding themselves unable to stop thinking about their loss, and having to have a sudden sit-down, while their eyes glaze over, lost in reminiscing about times past, and looking slightly teary, but not all snotty and puffy-eyed...well this is the exact song I'd be looking to use.

For starters it's an exact lyrical match. Lots of stuff about things never being the same again, and having to be strong, even though the person who usually helps you keep it together is no longer able to fulfil that role.

Then there's that anthemic, rousing, all-hold-hands chorus. A little bit of light among the darkness, some hope in a time of despair, a communal hug to ward off loneliness - that's going to raise a few eye-pricks among your audience. A lot of gulping and fishing around in pockets for tissues (assuming they liked the character who died, obv).

Hell, I'd even go so far as to say that people who are in the midst of actual real bereavement would find a lot in this song to help them through. Not least the lack of preposterously over-sexy mock-arousal, or vocal showing-off which can occasionally blight Sugababes songs.

In fact, the only thing which is holding this back is that it disappears from the memory really quickly. I mean I've been listening to this song and thinking about it really hard for a few days now, and yet I can't really remember how it goes when it's not purring out of the headphones. That's a little worrying.

But then, right now, I'm not the right person to be judging the song. I'm neither in mourning or caught up in a TV death, so it deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Plus the video is CRACKERS, and that's always fun.

So what exactly do you like about this song? Surely you cannot judge it solely on the video? Re-release New Year I say, that was Sugababes gold.

[Oh yes, good point! I like this song well enough, but it's a bit forgettable is all. New Year is amazing tho - Fraser]
