Wudu or washing in preparation for prayer
Description
Muslim children show how they prepare for prayer by washing in a special way. They explain that this is called Wudu and show how to carry it out. The footage also shows Muslims praying together before meeting with others to pray at the mosque to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
Classroom Ideas
After watching the clips, students could discuss how they prepare for school in the morning. Do they wake up on their own? Have their clothes ready? Wash or eat anything? Check their homework? Pack their lunch?
Students could be given a set of flashcards depicting images of the preparations for prayer. Hand them out and encourage students to discuss what they mean and how they feel about them. This could lead to a discussion about the symbolism of Muslims removing their shoes before worship.
