Tess finds her location in the Cairngorms using a compass and map. She learns about contour lines and looks at the physical features of the mountain environment.

Students could be given a compass and a map of the school grounds on which some areas have been left blank. They could practise using the compass in the classroom, before using it to explore the grounds and complete the map by filling in the blanks.

Alternatively students could be given pictures of different hills and mountains, labelled with their height. The height requirements of munros, corbetts and grahams could be shown on the board and students could categorise the pictures accordingly.
