Learn some safe methods to peel and grate foods whilst making some crunchy, healthy snacks.
Using a peeler safely
When peeling, always keep your fingers away from the blade and ask an adult to supervise.
There are two safe ways to use a peeler.
Long foods
If the food is long, like a carrot, stand the food tall with your hand on the top.
Peel from halfway down the food to the chopping board.
Flip the food to peel the other end.
Round foods
If the food is round, like a potato, press a fork into the top of the food.
Hold the fork to keep your hand away from the peeler.
Press the peeler鈥檚 blade against the food and push downwards towards the chopping board.
Using a grater safely
Graters have lots of little, sharp blades, so it is important to ask an adult to help you to use it safely.
This is a safe way to use a grater:
Hold the handle on top of the grater with your holding hand, keeping the grater flat on the chopping board.
Hold the food with your strongest hand.
Press the food down the grater slowly and carefully.
Bring the food back to the top of the grater and repeat.
Remember to keep your fingers away from the grater when holding the food. Stop grating when there is a small piece of food left. Do not try to grate it all.
