A common way to say ‘hello’ in Mandarin is n? h?o.

In China, people often greet each other with:

Nǐ chī le ma? - Have you eaten yet?

Your greeting might also change depending on the time of day:

or zǎo shang 丑ǎ辞 or zǎo āngood morning
or xià wǔ 丑ǎ辞 or wǔ āngood afternoon
wǎn āngood night

'How are you?'

To ask a person how they are feeling in Mandarin, you can use:

N? h?o ma? - How are you? or You good?

Here are some answers in Mandarin that you could try:

bù tài 丑ǎ辞not so good

To be polite, you can thank them for asking with xiè xie (thank you).

You can then return the question with Nǐ ne? (And you?)

'Goodbye'

You can finish any conversation in Mandarin with a simple zài jiàn (goodbye).

Tom: Nǐ 丑ǎ辞! N? h?o ma? - Hello! How are you?

Mary: Wǒ hěn 丑ǎ辞. Nǐ ne? - I'm very good. And you?

Tom: Wǒ fēi cháng 丑ǎ辞, xiè xie ! - I'm great, thank you!

Mary: Zài jiàn - Goodbye!

Tom: Zài jiàn - Goodbye!
