Weathering
Description
Aerial erosion also has a role to play in the formation of coastal features such as the Bullers of Buchan in Aberdeenshire. Here weaknesses in the rock stretch to the surface above a cave, resulting in the formation of a blowhole. In Stonehaven, weathering has resulted in slumping when material saturated by rain has become too heavy and unstable to stay up.
Classroom Ideas
Students could describe the process of weathering that has created some real life examples. They should produce annotated diagrams that explain the key stages of slumping and the formation of blow holes. Introduce the concept that chemical action can also contribute to weathering.
