What is a quarter?

Finding a quarter means finding one of four equal parts.

There are four quarters in one whole.

Finding a quarter of an amount

You can find a quarter of an amount of objects.

To find a quarter, you need to count how many objects there are in the whole first.

Then share the total number into four equal groups. A quarter is the number in one group.

Example

Here are some apples. Can you count how many there are in total?

Eight apples.

There are 8 apples in total.

To find a quarter, you have to split the 8 apples into 4 equal groups.

Four pairs of apples.

By sharing the apples into 4 equal groups, you can see there are 2 in each group.

Therefore, a quarter of 8 is 2.

Find your four favourite teddies or toys. They are going to have a teddy bear picnic!

You need some items for the teddies to share. For example 20 grapes, 12 raisins, 4 plates, 1 chocolate bar, 4 glasses, 1 bottle of water, 1 pizza.

The teddies want to share everything equally.

Can you make sure that each teddy gets a fair share of the picnic?
