Persuading people to eat Brussels sprouts (pt 1/2)
Description
In the first of two clips, this film begins with a mock Newsround report about the nation鈥檚 hatred of Brussels sprouts. Experts attempt to explain why the vegetable is so unpopular. A large financial reward is offered to anyone who can help to improve the sprouts鈥 image and increase its popularity. The experts also explain how it is eaten and when they are traditionally served.
Classroom Ideas
Students could recap the reasons why Brussels sprouts are so unpopular. Students could then work together to develop arguments against each of these reasons, which could persuade the public to change their mind. These arguments could be used to create a persuasive presentation, or piece of writing, to try to claim the large prize presented in the clip. Alternatively, students could write a newspaper article describing the problem and include the opinions of experts and members of the public.
