Food production
Different countries produce different types of food, which is often dependent on their climateThe average weather conditions in a location based on the average weather experienced there over a period of time.. For example, Asian countries grow rice, African countries grow cocoa, South American countries produce oil cropPlants such as soybeans, sunflower seed and rapeseed. These are used to produce cooking oils, food for livestock, and industry., and European countries produce a lot of milk and fish. Of all arable landLand that can be used for farming in the world, around half is farmed.
Modern food production allows some, but not all, of the world鈥檚 population to enjoy a varied diet throughout the year. For example, it is possible to eat strawberries in winter in the UK. This scale of food production can have negative impacts on people, animals and places.
Increasing food milesThe distance that food has travelled in order to reach our plates. adds to global climate changeWhen atmospheric conditions, such as temperature and rainfall, change over time. Currently, our climate is becoming warmer over time and this is called global warming.. This is because fuel is required to move food between countries, which leads to increased carbon emissionCarbon gases that are given off by certain activities. For example, burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide..
Question
Why do different countries produce different types of food?
Different crops require different growing conditions. For example, rice needs a warm climate with plenty of rainfall in order to grow well. It is easier and cheaper to grow crops that are suited to the climate of your country.
What are the causes of food insecurity?
There is enough food to feed everyone, but it is not evenly spread, and some countries have food insecurityNot having a reliable supply of affordable and nutritious food.. The population in high income countries (HICs)Countries recognised by the World Bank as being wealthier. This classification is reviewed yearly. such as the United Kingdom is consuming more food than it needs, which can lead to problems such as obesityA medical condition in which excess body fat on a person has gathered to the extent that it may affect their health.. low income countries (LICs)Countries recognised by the World Bank as having a lower income than other countries. This classification is reviewed yearly., like Niger, in Africa, have less food than they need which leads to malnutritionWhen a person does not consume enough calories or nutritious food, which may have a bad effect on their health..
Average global food consumptionWhen something is eaten. is increasing. The world鈥檚 population is growing at a rate of 1.08 per cent per year, meaning there are around 80 million additional people to feed each year. Also, as countries become wealthier, their populations eat more as they have more money to spend on food.
The global supply of food is affected by several factors.
- global temperatures and rainfall (climate)
- technologyMachinery and equipment, for example tractors or water pumps.
- political unrest or conflictA serious disagreement between individuals or groups of people. It can range from a minor disagreement to a war.
- pestThings that can damage crops. Pests include aphids and locusts. and diseaseThings that can damage crops. Diseases include wheat rust and brown streak virus.
Question
Why is global food consumption increasing?
Global food consumption is increasing because the world鈥檚 population is growing and more people have money to spend on food.
What are the effects of food insecurity?
- Millions of people go hungry each year and may not be able to eat for extended periods.
- Farmers try to produce more food. Trees are cut-down to make more farmland and more cattle are squeezed into fields. This causes soil erosionWhen soil is taken away by things like the wind and water. Loss of soil through erosion makes it harder to grow crops. and deforestationThe removal of trees. This is sometimes done to make land for farming, roads or settlement..
- When the demand for food exceeds the supply, prices increase. Many of the most vulnerable people cannot afford to eat.
- Food is a basic human need. Food shortages can lead to conflict.
