The Open Door policy and immigration to 1928
At the end of World War One there were three main ethnic groups in the USA - White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, 'new' immigrants from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, and Black Americans.
Separate but equal policy to 1939
Despite emancipation during the Civil War, black Americans continued to face prejudice. Many states introduced legislation - known as Jim Crow laws - that segregated black from white Americans.
Civil rights campaigns 1945-1965
Notable events in the civil rights movement in the 1950s were the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Little Rock. The 1960s saw Sit Ins, the Freedom Rides and protests in Birmingham, Alabama.
Ghettos and black American radicalism
In the early 1960s alternative approaches to the Civil Rights movement developed. Organisations which advocated different approaches included the Nation of Islam and the Black Panthers.
