Hadrian's Wall
Description
Hadrian鈥檚 Wall in northern England was built to mark the boundaries of the Roman Empire and to keep the Scots out. Constructed after the visit of Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD by the Roman army, Hadrian鈥檚 Wall was constructed and protected by the Roman soldiers living in forts alongside it. The wall is 120 km long and was the furthest frontier of the Roman Empire, apart for the short time that the Romans occupied the Antonine Wall.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be set a research task to find out more information about Hadrian鈥檚 Wall. The materials used to build the wall, its design and defences could be investigated. Students could design and built their own Roman wall, considering: how the wall will be protected; where the soldiers stationed there will live; what it should be made of; where the materials will come from; what obstacles will keep enemies out.
Using a map of Britain, students could decide where the best place to locate their wall would be. Students could present their wall to students, describing its design and justifying its location.
