Manchester cholera epidemic of 1832 (pt 2/2)

Description

Dr Henry Gaulter鈥檚 cholera map led him to believe housing played a role in the spread of cholera in parts of Britain. He interviews residents of back-to-backs.

The voice-over explains why this type of housing was built, the rapid urbanisation as people came from villages for work, and why back-to-backs were a haven for infectious disease.

Classroom Ideas

Students could discuss the reasons why disease spread so quickly (eg poor quality housing). Students could also write up a 鈥榳ish list鈥 - noting ideal changes they would like to have made at the time after learning of Dr Henry Gaulter鈥檚 findings. They could also list other examples of major epidemics and outbreaks and discuss how they had an impact on the British population.
