The effect of the Gulf Stream on the climate of Scotland
Description
Logan Botanic Garden in Galloway is able to grow plants that would not survive elsewhere in Scotland. This is because Galloway has a mild climate due to the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a flow of warm seawater which passes the west coast of Scotland and brings warmer weather. Logan is seldom affected by frost or snow.
Classroom Ideas
Students could imagine they are planning to sail a ship along the Gulf Stream from the Gulf of Mexico to Scotland. Students could plot their course on a map, making sure that they always stay within the stream. Students could also create a journal entry, describing the plants and animals they encounter in areas affected by the Gulf Stream which would not normally be found in those countries.
Students could also research typical temperatures in Logan Botanic Garden compared to other parts of Scotland. What would Britain be like if there wasn鈥檛 a gulf stream? Students could investigate and discuss.
