Tone, mood, atmosphere

This poem seems to convey a sense of hope in a hostile universe . Love is the thing that here seems to defeat time and even, nature. However it appears to be a love that is not yet fulfilled but a love that is hoped for.

The poet takes us on a tour of some of the most atmospheric and beautiful parts of his home country. He constantly evokes the sea in his imagery. The sea renewing love in my spirit, the sea draining drop by drop, the unhappy surging sea and the ocean filling Talisker Bay forever.

As ever, MacLean can be seen to be steeped in the natural environment of his upbringing: In nature he sees everything. Through it he makes us aware of longing, love and beauty.
