Repetition
O鈥機asey uses repetition effectively and very poignantly when Juno repeats Mrs Tancred鈥檚 words, "take away our hearts o鈥 stone, and give us hearts o鈥 flesh" after Johnny鈥檚 death.
Mrs Tancred utters these words in desperation as she grieves for her son, but they are given added power when Juno repeats them at the play鈥檚 climax after her son is shot by his former IRA comrades.
As well as showing the terrible bereavementThe period after losing a loved one, filled with intense feelings of grief or mourning. of women who lost their sons, this phrase seems to be O鈥機asey鈥檚 way of condemning "man鈥檚 inhumanity to man" and pleading for more kindness and "hearts o鈥 flesh".
