There are different methods of collecting data for each of the four factors. Whichever method you choose, you need to ensure that it is appropriate and that you know its benefits and limitations.

Digital analysis

This method involves your performance being recorded. During the performance, either you or your coach will tell your partner what to focus on. The video will be positioned high above the court around the centre line and pointed at what you/your coach has instructed you to focus on.

For example, if the analysis was looking at a certain zonal structure in basketball, they would focus the camera on your defensive half and watch how quickly you get into shape and how your team moves as a unit.

At the end of the performance, your team would watch the video back with your coach and stop it to identify positives and negatives.

Digital analysis is considered to produce data. This is because it provides live footage for you to assess and analyse. It is not opinion based; it shows what actually happened. However, it is important the person analysing the footage is knowledgeable and a non-biased observer.

Limitations

  1. Ensure the camera is positioned at the appropriate angle so it catches the relevant aspects of your performance that you are interested in. This will ensure that you can identify the relevant strengths and weaknesses for your selected tactic.
  2. Have a knowledgeable person as observer analysing your recorded performance to ensure you receive accurate feedback.
  3. Watch the recording of your performance with this knowledgeable observer so you can see where you went wrong in slow motion, which will give you a deeper understanding of how to improve.
