Current government policy

The Agriculture Act 2020 is a Government bill that was passed in the House of Commons following Brexit (the departure of the UK from the ).

Both the UK Government and Scottish Parliament have a huge impact upon rural environments and farming practices. Below are a few examples of how they impact upon farming in Scotland.

The UK Government provide (money) for certain initiatives e.g. efficient irrigation systems or automated planting, weeding and harvesting equipment.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to tackle inequality and deprivation in rural areas.

The Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) supports farmers to ensure sustainable economic growth in less favoured areas e.g. the Highlands and islands of Scotland. The SRDP offers support and advice to farmers as well as money to support rural communities, including farmers.

Forestry Grant Schemes are given for the creation or improvement of woodland areas.

The Small Farms Grant Scheme ensures the sustainability of smaller farms, so they can continue to operate.

The Agri-Environment Climate Scheme provides funding to farmers who promote land management in ways that protect Scotland鈥檚 natural heritage, manage flood risk and adapt to climate change.
