Higher PE - Explain questions
Explain questions ask you to:
- give reasons for something
- state the effect this then has
In doing this, you are looking to show cause and effect and are moving beyond mere justification.
Unlike describe, you are now looking to pick up a mark every two sentences.
Look at explain questions as if they were looking for you to open a door:
- you have the lock, which is sentence one: why did you select something?
- then you have the key, which is sentence two: what logical effect did this then have?
If the cause (sentence one) and effect (sentence two) match up correctly, you unlock the door and pick up a mark.
To make your answer even better and flow smoothly, use linking terms such as This means鈥
and This leads to鈥
at the start of sentence two to bring the answer together.
Question
Explain why a performer may use quantitative data to collect information on physical factors. (1).
- A performer may use quantitative dataInformation that can be measured or calculated numerically. because it gives them factual information about their agility levels
- This means that they can trust the accuracy of their results and use this information to help them set realistic targets.
Whilst looking at the above answer, it is important to note that: sentence one actually brings about the effect in sentence two. Therefore, it is vital that your explanation answers fit together. Not all keys fit all locks!
