  • EDWARD and his father romp on the floor. – This makes it seem like their family is happy and they are having fun together.
  • Daddy... we haven’t finished the story yet. – This changes the mood of the extract because Edward seems disappointed that his father is leaving while they are still reading.
  • I just – it’s not me, it’s Edward. – Mrs Lyons is hesitant and pauses twice in her lines, which implies that she is worried so the atmosphere here is more tense.
  • Must dash. – Mr Lyons speaks in short sentences, suggesting that he is rushing and doesn’t have time for his son, which is sad.
  • ...a silly mother might say to her children – This reminds the audience of Mrs Johnstone because she is superstitious and she told Edward about the bogeyman.
  • Does he? Is he comin’ out to play, eh? – The contrast between Mickey and Mrs Lyons here is emphasised because Mickey speaks casually and uses slang while she is formal. This can provide humour.
