Joey Yu: Mixed media art means creating art using a mixture of different tools, materials or techniques.

The options are endless, because you're the artist and you get to make all the choices.

You will need your sketchbook and well… anything you like, really.

Today I'm going to use wax crayons, acrylic paints, and strips of paper.

First I've sketched out a beach picture, so I know roughly what I'm going to create.

I'm going to have the shore here. This will be the sea and this is the sky.

I'm going to start with this yellow wax crayon and use it to draw a nice, bright sun in the sky. You have to press quite hard with the wax crayons. There we go.

Now some water based paint to paint my sky. I'm going to make it really nice and watery. Watch how it makes the sun really pop.

The waxy crayon resists the water based paint. So we won't leave any colour on those parts of the paper. This is called wax resist.

For the sand long strips of paper make this great sandy, rippled effect this dark blue, tissue paper works well to make the sea. Ican even crinkle it to show all the movement in the water.

I'm going to dab some splashes of foam on to the tops of the waves using a little white paint on a sponge.

If you've got any blue left on your sun just give it a dab with your sponge.

Here it is, made using wax crayons, paint, and tissue paper all in one piece of art.
