The
tobacco industry employs millions of people worldwide but it produces
a product that has serious health implications. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that every minute, eight people die from tobacco-related disease. By the year 2030, it foresees 10m people will be dying every year.
WHO is now negotiating the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, a tough treaty which it aims to complete by 2003. If ratified, FCTC is likely to restrict tobacco marketing, advertising and sponsorship.
