The Welsh 2010 Commonwealth Games hopeful reveals his top tips for success.

Overcoming setbacks

You've just got to get on with it. I love competing and I know I can achieve when I'm fit. There's no point giving up just because you get injured every now and then. You've got to fight on. I know what I'm capable of achieving and I take it race by race.

Stay positive

I've always believed that when you compete in an event, anything can happen. I've been to so many major championships where I haven't been in the greatest of shape, but I've still managed to make a final and win medals. As long as you're ready on that start line, anything can happen.

Persevere

I train nearly every day. It's hard work, demanding on my family and some days I can be a little bit grumpy if things haven't gone well. However, I said to myself that I've got two more years left in my running career so why not make a go of it!

The rewards

When I was younger I didn't really know what I was going to do with my life, but by the time I was 19-years-old I was World Junior Champion, Commonwealth Games silver medallist and a world-class athlete and I've never looked back.

Enjoy the experience

I remember going to my first Commonwealth Games at 19-years-old. All I wanted to do was enjoy myself and I ended up coming away with a silver medal. You have to work hard for months leading up to a key event so when the time comes to perform just go out and enjoy it.

Believe in your ability

Don't be fazed if you have a top competitor in your heat. Go out there and challenge them. You've got to say to yourself "If they are going to compete today, they have to perform very well in order to beat me." Push them to the limit, because you never know what might happen.

You need to be driven and focused on what you do.
