Your little one is more likely to communicate with you about something that interests them. When you follow their lead, the words you use will match the things they are thinking about, helping them to learn the links between words and what they mean.

Watch Mum follow her daughter's interests and talk about them, as they take a bus journey.

How following your child's lead helps them learn

It helps them to:

  • Learn the words for things that interest them
  • Learn to link the words they hear to their meanings

Going on a journey can introduce all sorts of new sights and sounds to your child.

Name some of the things they see and are interested in.

They might say words like 'tunnel'. If they do, repeat the word back to them in a short sentence, like 'yes, we're going through a tunnel'.

This will help them hear how the word is used in a sentence.
