Feeds are a great time for early bonding with your baby and can be brilliant for their early language learning too.
Take the time to sing and chat to your baby as you feed them to make the most of this one-to-one time.
For some inspiration, take a look at the video below.
Why sing to baby during feeds?
- It allows baby to get used to the sound of your voice, crucial for their later language learning
- It makes the most of face-to-face time with your baby, the close contact lets them watch your face as you sing the words and helps them to begin to see how words are formed by your mouth
- Your baby loves hearing your voice, they've been hearing it since before birth, so it can help them to stay calm and happy during feeds
- The skin to skin contact while feeding, coupled with the sound of your voice singing, will give a big boost of happy hormones to you and your baby. These are great for forming a strong bond with one another
What should I sing to my baby?
You can sing anything you like to your baby while feeding - what matters is that they hear your voice, feel your touch and that you make plenty of eye contact with them as you sing.
Try to be as expressive as you can to engage your baby as you sing to them.
You might want to sing a traditional nursery rhyme, or you could make up your own rhymes and have some fun. Alternatively, you could sing along to your favourite artist.
It doesn't matter if you're not a natural singer - your baby will love it no matter what. However, if you're not keen on singing, then you could try telling them all about your day.
