Changing UK - A sense of community

The 91热爆 has commissioned a team from Sheffield University, led by Professor Danny Dorling, to compile a list of statistics that paint a picture of how out lives and communities have changed in the last 40 years.

Bon Anomie

First of all, let鈥檚 get to grips with what the research team mean by 鈥淎nomie鈥. They describe it as a "poor sense of belonging". The higher the anomie index, the poorer sense of belonging people have to their community.

The figure is calculated using four different pieces of data. If people are unmarried and living in one person households, privately rented accommodation, or they've听 moved to an area in the last year, they will be counted in these figures.

So we need to treat this with some caution. It鈥檚 not a mathematical indication of the number of "lonely" people. Students will fall into this category, though they may well not be lonely, though they arguably may not have a great sense of "belonging" to their community.

These figures could be handy, though, in painting a picture of how bits of our community are changing. The anomie figure for the UK was 26.4 in 2001, up from 18.7% in 1971.

The figure for the North East and Cumbria was 24.5%, up from 17.3% in 1971. In the Tees region, we fare slightly better at 23.6%.

Interestingly, there is a real mix in the figures with the highest Amonie ratings. Some areas which appear on the wealthy list still have "poor sense of belonging", as do some of our poorer areas. Note also the sharp increase in the figures in the last thirty years.

1 MIDDLESBROUGH EAST 35% (1991 28.5%)(1981 20.2%)(1971 18.8%)
2 RICHMOND WEST 34.7% (1991 23.8%)(1981 17.8%)(1971 16.8%)
3 HARTLEPOOL EAST 30.1% (1991 24.0%)(1981 19.5%)(1971 17.0%)
4 BARNARD CASTLE 29.04% (1991 28.7%)(1981 20.7%)(1971 18.7%)
5 DARLINGTON EAST 28% (1991 23.4%)(1981 19.3%)(1971 18.1%)
6 STOCKTON NORTON 24.6% (1991 22.8%)(1981 18.5%)(1971 16.5%)
7 DARLINGTON WEST 23.5% (1991 23.5%)(1981 19.7%)(1971 17.9%)
8 SEDGEFIELD EAST 22.9% (1991 20.1%)(1981 17.3%)(1971 17.3%)
9 RICHMOND EAST 22.6%(1991 23.8%)(1981 17.8%)(1971 16.8%)
10 REDCAR EAST 22.3% (1991 18.1%)(1981 15.3%)(1971 16.6%)

Eaglescliffe has the lowest figure in the whole of the North East and Cumbria, suggesting it could be the strongest community from Berwick to the Lake District. Billingham is not far behind.

1 EAGLESCLIFFE 17.1% (1991 17.7%)(1981 15.3%)(1971 16.7%)
2 BILLINGHAM 17.8% (1991 17.5%)(1981 15.6%)(1971 15.1%)
3 REDCAR EAST 18.0% (1991 18.1%)(1981 15.3%)(1971 16.6%)
4 MIDDLESBROUGH SOUTH 18.9% (1991 18.5%)(1981 15.4%)(1971 14.7%)
5= SEDGEFIELD WEST 19.7% (1991 19.3%)(1981 16.4%)(1971 17.3%)
5=HARTLEPOOL WEST 19.7% (1991 17.9%)(1981 15.2%)(1971 14.8%)
7 SEDGEFIELD EAST 20.2% (1991 20.1%)(1981 17.3%)(1971 17.3%)
8 PETERLEE 20.8% (1991 19.6%)(1981 18.1%)(1971 16.1%)
9 EAST CLEVELAND 21.7%(1991 21.3%)(1981 17.3%)(1971 18.1%)
10 SPENNYMOOR 22.0% (1991 20.6%)(1981 17.1%)(1971 16.0%)
