Oil rig at Able UK

The oil rig to be dismantled

Scrap metal to create 50 new jobs

The largest decommissioning project to come out of the North Sea is set to take place in Hartlepool and will create 50 new jobs for the area.

Twenty-four thousand tonnes of metal is to be chopped up and turned into scrap in Hartlepool. Able UK has been chosen by BP to break up an oil rig from the North Sea in a decommissioning project worth 拢15 million.

The platform has travelled from a point which is a hundred and thirty kilometres north east of the Shetlands - that's two or three days travelling at sea.听 Now the rig has been dismantled into 22 pieces onshore, each one is sitting at Able UK鈥檚 Teesside yard.

"Some of the modules have a small amount of waste on them.听 We鈥檒l remove that waste in a safe manner."

Glyn Wheeler, Able UK

The Managing Director at Able UK Glyn Wheeler said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 the largest decommissioning project ever to be undertaken in the North Sea to date and we鈥檙e very proud to have won that.

鈥淭he locality has a history of heavy industry, we can tap into that 鈥 we promote our site with that being the case and people are already knocking on the door to come and work on these platforms which is good news for the locality the North East and I guess the UK at large.鈥

The decommissioning of any type of equipment used in the oil industry raises questions about the environment.听 Over 98 per cent of the units at the Graythorp site will be recycled.

Glyn Wheeler added, 鈥淪ome of the modules have a small amount of waste on them.听 We鈥檒l remove that waste in a safe manner, in a very environmentally friendly manner to give the whole job the best practical environmental option.听

"And when we鈥檝e done that we will then recycle the steel that you see back into the steel industry and that could end up as the next oil platform or maybe even your next car.鈥

As part of the contract Able UK will also receive the platform鈥檚 jackets in June next year.听 The jackets are the 'legs' that hold up the platform from beneath the sea.听 They also need to be dismantled.
