The Centurion
We join a Roman centurion on one night of his life, as he describes his work repairing Hadrian's Wall. Cornelius is 39 years old and has 80 soldiers under his command, who are now resting before turning in for the night.
Cornelius describes how they have marched and set up camp, but that he is feeling wary - he's anxious about the possibility of attack and remembers a previous occasion when he and the soldiers were taken by surprise by a group of 'Barbarians' from the other side of the Wall.
He'd prefer to be back in the safety of the Roman fort; even better than that, he'd like to be retired and living out his days in the company of his daughter and grandson who live in Camulodunum, much further to the south.
