One hot summer鈥檚 day a Grasshopper sat on a blade of grass enjoying the sunshine.
鈥榃hat a fine day,鈥 he said. 鈥楾he sun鈥檚 shining and I鈥檝e got as much grass as I can eat.鈥
The Grasshopper spent the whole morning stuffing his face until he couldn鈥檛 eat another thing.
鈥楻ight,鈥 he said. 鈥楴ow I鈥檒l make some music.鈥
He rubbed his back legs against his wings and made a loud buzzing sound.
鈥楲ovely,鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥楴othing better than the sound of a happy Grasshopper.鈥
鈥楪ive it a rest,鈥 said a passing Ant.
鈥榃hat?鈥 said the Grasshopper.
鈥業鈥檓 trying to work here,鈥 said the Ant. 鈥榊ou鈥檙e giving me a headache.鈥
鈥榊ou don鈥檛 like my music?鈥 said the Grasshopper.
鈥楴ot my kind of thing,鈥 said the Ant. 鈥楢nyway ain鈥檛 got time to stand around talking about music. Got stuff to do.鈥
鈥楽tuff?鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥榃hat stuff have you got to do on a lovely sunny morning like this?鈥
鈥楪otta get this food shifted,鈥 said the Ant.
The Grasshopper noticed that the Ant was dragging along a huge ear of corn.
鈥楾hat looks like hard work, mate,鈥 said the Grasshopper.
鈥楾ell me about it,鈥 said the Ant.
鈥榃hat you doing with it?鈥 said the Grasshopper.
鈥楾aking it to our nest,鈥 said the Ant.
鈥榃hat鈥檙e you doing that for?鈥
鈥楩ood for the winter,鈥 said the Ant. 鈥楪otta get ready for the winter.鈥
鈥榃hy?鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥榃inter won鈥檛 come for ages. Won鈥檛 be winter till鈥he winter. It鈥檚 summer now. Why worry about the winter?鈥
鈥榃e always worry about the winter.鈥 said the Ant. 鈥榃e spend all summer gathering up food for the winter. It鈥檚 what we ants do.鈥
鈥業t鈥檚 not what Grasshoppers do,鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥榃e Grasshoppers know how to enjoy the summer. Eat鈥leep鈥ake some cool music鈥t鈥檚 a fine life. We Grasshoppers know how to live, see.鈥
鈥楻ight,鈥 said the Ant. 鈥業鈥檒l leave you to it.鈥
鈥楧on鈥檛 go, Ant, mate,鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥楽tick around. Pass the day with me.鈥
鈥楽orry.鈥 said the Ant. 鈥楲ike I said, I got stuff to do.鈥
The Ant dragged his ear of corn and struggled off across the field.
鈥楶lease yourself,鈥 called the Grasshopper. 鈥業鈥檓 not bothered. I got stuff to do too. Got all this grass to eat. Got the sun to enjoy. Not gonna waste a lovely day like this talking to ants! Have you ever seen a more silly creature than an ant?鈥 shouted the Grasshopper.
It was winter. The Grasshopper was cold. Too cold to hop. Too cold to make his music. And he was hungry. He鈥檇 spent all day looking for something to eat. Suddenly he saw the Ant.
鈥楬ello Ant,鈥 he shivered. 鈥楻emember me?鈥
鈥榊ep,鈥 said the Ant.
鈥楥old, isn鈥檛 it?鈥 said the Grasshopper.
鈥楴ice and warm in our nest,鈥 said the Ant.
鈥楴ot so much to eat now is there,鈥 said the Grasshopper.
鈥榃e鈥檝e got plenty,鈥 said the Ant. 鈥極ur store rooms are full of seeds and corn. Got loads of food. Enough to see us safely through to spring.鈥
鈥楲oads of food, eh?鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥楲ook鈥ate鈥 don鈥檛 suppose I could鈥? I don鈥檛 suppose you鈥檇 be able to give me鈥?鈥
鈥榊ou said you鈥檇 never seen a more silly creature than an Ant,鈥 said the Ant.
鈥業 didn鈥檛 mean that,鈥 said the Grasshopper. 鈥楾hat was just a joke. Oh, come on. Just a couple of ears of corn. You can spare it. I鈥檝e got nothing.鈥
鈥楽orry鈥ate,鈥 said the Ant. 鈥業f you save up on the days when you have plenty then there鈥檒l never be a day when you have nothing.鈥
The Ant hurried down into his warm nest knowing that he鈥檇 never ever see that Grasshopper again.
